Dear Friend,
I am a member of a team of medical students from the Latin American
School of Medicine in Havana, Cuba that recognizes the importance of
working in solidarity with underserved communities. This August, we
head to New Orleans, Louisiana to work with First Grace United
Methodist Church to address the health needs of the community through
health education and faith.
First Grace is like a microcosm of the city: the community is the
result of the merging of one traditionally black church and one
traditionally white church after Hurricane Katrina. Since the change,
they have grown tremendously in spirit and programming. Last year,
they executed a summer health workshop series that focused on
nutrition, weight loss, and setting individual health goals.
This summer we plan to build on last year’s work focusing on improving
biological, psychological, and community health. In order to achieve
our goals, we have planned a week of assessment, education, and
prevention through workshops and other activities.
We have the human resources for this dynamic week but are in need of
financial contributions to make the project happen. If you are
interested in supporting our mission, remember that all donations are
tax-deductible.
Thank you in advance for your support of our endeavor as future
physicians to promote health and wellness, one community at a time.
In health and justice, Gina Lutz MD Candidate 2014
