New Orleans City Council committee recommends special sales tax to support planned Magnolia Marketplace | NOLA.com

A travesty. Developers buy land, lure national chains not worth shopping at and then pass along increased sales tax to this at-risk area of residents who are often reduced to shopping wherever they can walk or take a bus.
The proposed ordinance would give the City Council the power to impose a new tax, limited to sales within the shopping complex, through the creation of the Magnolia Economic Development District. The tax increase would finance $2.3 million in bonds and expire after 15 years once the debt is paid off.
